TIPTOE Study

Are you aged 65+ and live with knee or hip joint pain?

You could be eligible to take part in a research study to help improve your quality of life.

The TIPTOE study run by Cardiff University and supported by Health and Care Research Wales, is looking into how well a personalised support programme can help with individuals living with pain in the knee and/or hip alongside other long-term conditions.

The study involves six one-to-one sessions with a trained healthcare practitioner, over six months held either face-to-face or online video call. It is advised participants take part with a nominated support person to help with navigating the study website and attend support sessions.

“Cymryd rheolaeth a byw bywyd i’r eithaf” – astudiaeth TIPTOE yn cefnogi pobl sy’n byw gydag osteoarthritis

Mae astudiaeth a gefnogir gan Ymchwil Iechyd a Gofal Cymru yn ymchwilio i raglen gymorth wedi’i phersonoli sy’n ceisio gwella bywydau pobl sy’n byw gyda phoen pen-glin a chlun, gan eu helpu i ‘gymryd rheolaeth a byw eu bywyd i’r eithaf’.

Mae’r prosiect ymchwil, TIPTOE, yn edrych ar sut y gallai rhaglen gymorth wedi’i phersonoli helpu pobl dros 65 oed sy’n byw gydag osteoarthritis ac o leiaf un cyflwr iechyd hirdymor arall.

Bydd cyfranogwyr yn cael eu rhoi ar hap mewn i ddau grŵp: bydd un yn derbyn gofal GIG fel arfer, a bydd y grŵp arall yn cymryd rhan mewn hyd at chwe sesiwn un i un gydag ymarferydd gofal iechyd hyfforddedig dros chwe mis, yn ogystal ag unrhyw ofal arferol y maent eisoes yn ei gael.

Mae Val Hill, 79 oed o Gaerdydd, wedi byw gyda phoen pen-glin ac osteoarthritis ers bron i 50 mlynedd.  Mae ei phrofiad byw wedi arwain at ddod yn eiriolwr cryf dros ymchwil yn y maes hwn. Dywedodd hi:  “Mae astudiaeth TIPTOE yn helpu pobl i ddeall eu cyrff ac nid bod yn garcharorion o’u poen, ond i barhau i gymryd rhan mewn bywyd, i wneud pethau gyda’u plant a’u hwyrion.”

Dechreuodd taith Val bron i 50 mlynedd yn ôl gydag anaf i’w phen-glin wrth iddi blygu drosodd i nôl siopa o gefn fan. Syrthiodd i mewn i’r fan, gan rwygo’i phen-glin yn wael. Dywedodd hi:  “Fe wnes i anafu fy mhen-glin yn agos at 50 mlynedd yn ôl. Ond dros y blynyddoedd, mae osteoarthritis wedi datblygu hefyd.Dywedodd Ffion Davies, Nyrs Ymchwil yn y Ganolfan Ymchwil Treialon, sy’n cael ei ariannu gan Ymchwil Iechyd a Gofal Cymru, fod TIPTOE yn becyn cymorth gyda’r nod o helpu pobl sy’n byw gyda phoen yn y pen-glin a/neu boen yn y glun.

“Trwy sesiynau hyfforddi a llyfr sy’n llawn strategaethau, awgrymiadau a straeon, gallai cyfranogwyr ddysgu rheoli eu poen yn well.  Mae’n ymwneud â grymuso unigolion sydd ag osteoarthritis i hunanreoli, gyda’r bwriad o wella’u lles corfforol a meddyliol.

Case study – “Taking control and living life to the fullest” – the TIPTOE study supporting people living with osteoarthritis.

A study investigating a personalised support programme that aims to improve the lives of people living with knee and hip pain, helping them to ‘take control and live life to the fullest’.

The TIPTOE study, is looking at how a personalised support programme could help people over 65 who live with osteoarthritis and at least one other long-term health condition.

Participants will be randomised to two groups: one will receive NHS care as usual, while the other group will take part in up to six one-to-one sessions with a trained healthcare practitioner over six months, in addition to any usual care they are already receiving.

Val Hill, 79, from Cardiff, has lived with knee pain and osteoarthritis for nearly 50 years. Her lived experience has led to her becoming a strong advocate for research in this area. She said: “The TIPTOE study helps people to understand their bodies and not just be prisoners of their pain, but to still participate in life, to do things with their children and grandchildren.”

Val’s journey began almost 50 ago with an injury to her knee while she was leaning over to retrieve shopping from the back of a van. She toppled into the van, wrenching her knee badly. She said: “I injured my knee probably close to 50 years ago. But over the years, osteoarthritis has crept up.”

Val hopes to ensure that others have the tools, knowledge and support they need to live their lives to the fullest, despite the challenges of this chronic condition. She added: “It’s about talking, understanding and knowing others are going through the same thing.”

Ffion Davies, Research Nurse at the Centre for Trials Research, funded by Health and Care Research Wales, said TIPTOE is a support package aimed at helping people living with their knee and/or hip joint pain. “Through coaching sessions and a book filled with strategies, tips and stories, participants could learn to better manage their pain. It’s about empowering individuals with osteoarthritis to self-manage with a view to improving both their physical and mental wellbeing.”
