Total Triage

New Appointment System – Easy Guide

If you would like further information on this, please ask reception for a leaflet explaining the process fully.

What’s changing?

The practice is introducing a new way of booking appointments called “Total Triage.”

This is designed to make it easier and fairer for everyone to get help when they need it.

🩺 Why is this happening?

There are more patients needing care than there are appointments available. This is due to:

  • People living longer with more complex health needs
  • More care being done by GPs instead of hospitals
  • Fewer doctors available, especially in rural areas

👉 Because of this, the practice needs a better way to prioritise patients and use appointments effectively.

🖥️ What is “Total Triage”?

Instead of booking appointments straight away:

  1. You tell the practice about your problem first – usually by filling in a simple online form
  2. The practice reviews your request
  3. They decide the best way to help you

👉 Not everyone will need a GP appointment.

📋 What happens after I submit a request?

  • Admin queries → handled by admin staff
  • Prescription queries → handled by prescribing team
  • Medical problems → reviewed by a GP

You will then:

  • Get advice, OR
  • Be asked to book an appointment, OR
  • Be contacted directly if urgent

You can also track your request online.

🚑 What if my problem is urgent?

  • Urgent cases are identified quickly and prioritised
  • You may be offered a same-day appointment
  • If needed, you may be directed to hospital care sooner

👍 What are the benefits?

Easier access

  • Less need to phone at 8am
  • Shorter waiting times on the phone
  • You can contact the practice anytime online

Better care

  • You can fully explain your problem without being rushed
  • The right person deals with your issue first
  • GPs have more time for complex patients

More convenience

  • Updates and messages sent digitally
  • You may not need to visit the surgery at all

📱 What if I can’t use the internet?

  • A family member or carer can help
  • Reception staff can fill in the form for you
  • The practice will note patients who cannot use online services

👉 You will still be supported—no one will be left out.

❓ Do I need to create an account?

  • No – it’s optional
  • But registering lets you:
    • Track your request
    • Get updates faster by email

🤔 Will I still see a GP?

Yes, if needed.
However:

  • You might be seen by another healthcare professional if appropriate
  • This helps GPs focus on patients who need them most
